Here at Horwood House, we’ve always loved sharing our peaceful corner of Buckinghamshire with guests, but we can't forget the wonderful wildlife that calls our place in the country home. That’s why we’re so excited to welcome you to our brand-new Butterfly Resort, a special little area created to build awareness of the beautiful creatures that flutter through the grounds.
It’s no secret that butterflies are facing tough times, with over half of the UK’s butterfly species in long-term decline. These delicate creatures are not only breathtaking to watch; they’re also vital to our environment, playing a part in helping flowers bloom and our gardens thrive.
Our Butterfly Resort is made up of 20 butterfly houses, alongside a miniature park, pond and tiny football pitch. The resort is thoughtfully surrounded by butterflies’ favourite plants, including gorgeous buddleia, to provide shelter and nourishment for our colourful visitors. We’re especially proud to have invited local schoolchildren from Winchester House, Stowe, and Swanbourne House to decorate the houses, their creativity and enthusiasm shine through each one.
As our Hotel Manager, Leighton Reid shares, “This resort isn’t just about making our gardens more beautiful, it’s about sparking conversations and inspiring care for the natural world in everyone who visits.”
Horwood House is deeply committed to community efforts and conservation. This Butterfly Resort follows the success of our previous initiative, where we introduced bee hives onsite to support local pollinators and educate visitors about the vital role bees play in our ecosystem. We’re constantly exploring new ways to give back to nature and our community, creating initiatives that celebrate and protect the environment we all share.
Butterfly Conservation trustee, Hugh Ellerton joined us for the resort’s opening and reminded us how each of us can help protect these precious pollinators. Whether you join in with the Big Butterfly Count or simply appreciate the beauty of a butterfly on a summer’s day, every action counts.
We warmly invite you to come explore our Butterfly Resort next time you visit Horwood House. Together, we can celebrate nature and do our part to keep these little wonders fluttering for generations to come.
